"Here now was money in the bank, children who could read and write, grandchildren who would be professors if all went well. they spoke with guilty loyalty of customs they had themselves trampled into dust."
Mario Puzo is saying that the life these women are now experiencing in America is great compared to what they knew back in their homeland. they can now save more or have money, their kids can go to school and become better than they the parents have been. in America they have more opportunity. they children and grandchildren can or will be more educated and fortunate and will not have to experience what they have back in their homeland.
To me the women are now happier, feel accomplished and satisfied with life they are experiencing in America. for me I grew up on a farm in my country, we went to school, we were ate and was happy but coming to America gave us more educational and financial opportunities. more jobs more money and overall better quality of life.
